Xenia Hausner is a contemporary Austrian painter and stage designer. She comes from a family of artists, her father Rudolf Hausner was an important representative of the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism. Between 1972 and 1976 she studied stage design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. She created sets for theatre, opera and film, including the Burgtheater in Vienna, the Salzburg Festival, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London and the Theâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels, as well as the stage design for Der Rosenkavalier in the 2020 production by Andre Heller at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, Berlin. Since 1992 she works exclusively as a painter. Her works are exhibited internationally in galleries, art fairs and museums: Albertina, Shanghai Art Museum, Today Art Museum Beijing; Hong Kong Arts Centre; Batliner Art Foundation; Belvedere Museum Vienna; Kaethe Kollwitz Museum Berlin; Russian State Museum St Petersburg; Museum Wuerth France Erstein; Wuerth Collection Oslo; European Central Bank Frankfurt; collateral to the 57th Venice Biennale 2017 - “Glasstress” Palazzo Franchetti Venice; 8th Moscow Biennale, State Tretyakov Gallery Moscow; Forum Gallery New York; Bienalsur - South America's Art Biennale 2019 - "Juntos Aparte" Colombia. In her paintings she deals with people and takes the viewer into enigmatic pictorial worlds, mysterious situations and interpersonal relationships. Fragmentary situations and snapshots from everyday life in an expressive style and a strong color palette. The focus is on women in different roles as a counterpoint to history and art history, which are dominated by men. In the portrait shown here, a certain moment seems to have been captured. Hausner captures the gaze and posture of the red-haired young woman in a manner similar to a photograph.
