Elfriede Ettl was an Austrian nun and painter of the 20th century, who is still one of the most famous artists in Burgenland. She became a nun of the Sisters of the Divine Redeemer in 1933 and was also a teacher at the Theresianum Eisenstadt and a nurse in Košice, Slovakia. Ettl studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest from 1940 to 1945. Two participations (1954 and 1961) in Oskar Kokoschka's School of Vision at the International Summer Academy in Salzburg and courses with Josef Dobrowsky were formative for her. Ettl concentrated above all on watercolor painting, in the 1970s she experimented with other techniques and also devoted herself to photorealism. In 1961 she received the Oskar Kokoschka Prize, in 1980 the Culture Prize of the State of Burgenland, in 1987 the Grand Decoration of Honor of the State of Burgenland and in 1994 the Commander's Cross of the State of Burgenland.
