Alois Heidel was an Austrian sculptor from the 20th century. After an apprenticeship as a belter and chaser, he began studying at the Munich Art Academy in 1943. From 1946 to 1953 he studied sculpture at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna with Fritz Wotruba. 1953 -1969 Heidel created numerous sculptures for the city of Vienna (Viennese municipal buildings). Heidel initially created naturalistic, formally simplified sculptures (above all animal motifs) and in the course of his work in dealing with a wide variety of materials such as artificial stone, metal or brick, increasingly advanced into areas of abstraction and non-representational sculpture. From 1975 Heidel worked as a restorer at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. Heidel was a member of the Secession and received the City of Vienna Prize for Fine Arts for sculpture in 1962.
