Georg Philipp Woerlen was an German artist from the 20th century. He attended the School of Applied Arts in Nuremberg and learned from a church painter. He then worked as a restorer in the Altheimer studio in Regensburg. In 1914 he moved to Marnheim as a secondary school teacher. During his deployment at the front in World War I, his son Hanns Egon Woerlen was born. Georg Philipp Woerlen was buried and wounded twice; shortly before the end of the war he became a British prisoner of war. There he met Franz Bronstert and Fritz Fuhrken, with whom he later founded the "Fels". During this time Woerlen found his way to Expressionism and Cubism. After his return from captivity, Woerlen moved with his family to Passau and became an art teacher at the Gymnasium Leopoldinum. Together with Franz Bronstert, Fritz Fuhrken and Reinhard Hilker, he founded the artists' group "Der Fels, " which organized more than 30 exhibitions between 1920 and 1927. Carry Hauser joined this group a little later. The friendship between Woerlen and Hauser broke up around 1937 for political reasons. In 1923 and 1924 Woerlen was a member of the Kuenstlergruppe der 6 and from 1927 to 1938 a member of the Hagenbund. In 1947 he joined the Donau-Wald-Gruppe as a founding member.
