Carl Steinheil, Bauer mit Rindern bei der Feldarbeit
Carl Steinheil, Farmer with Cattle Working in the Fields
Summery, sunny landscape with farmers and ox teams in the field, impasto impressionist painting with a broad brushstroke in light colours, Julia Bergmann writes "... unusual for the time, Steinheil, who came from a wealthy family, was not dependent on commissioned work as a painter. ... This freedom and the artist's accompanying joy in experimentation is reflected in his work, in the leap between different styles, the brushwork, the application of paint. ... Steinheil paints what he sees, exactly as he sees it: as a detail, as a snapshot. And in doing so he plays with light and shadow, with light and dark, with moods in an outstanding way ...", oil on canvas, c. 1910, signed lower left "C. Steinheil", craquelure, paint shrinkage cracked, painting ground wavy, backed missing part in the canvas, somewhat restored, slight need of restoration, framed, folding dimensions c. 79.5 x 74 cm.
