Lucas Cranach the Elder, "The Tomb of John"
John descends into his tomb in front of an altar, in the background worshippers and altar with two Saxon coats of arms, from Georg Rhau/Wittenberg "Das Symbolum der Heiligen Aposteln", 1st half 16th cent, Woodcut, partly coloured, text on reverse (this slightly bleeding through), somewhat stained, paper loss at upper left, mounted in passepartout and framed behind glass, sheet dimensions approx. 16,3 x 12,5 cm. Artist's info: Important artist of the Renaissance (c. 1472 Kronach to 1553 Weimar), first training with his father, 1502-04 stay in Vienna and here contact with leading humanists, in 1505 received an appointment as court painter to Frederick the Wise of Saxony in Wittenberg, 1508 journey on diplomatic commission from Frederick the Wise to the Netherlands, c. 1515-20 produced first prints, 1520 bought an apothecary shop in Wittenberg, met Albrecht Dürer in Nuremberg in 1524, in Wittenberg befriended Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchton, after the death of Frederick the Wise court painter to John the Steadfast and John Frederick the Magnanimous, 1537-44 mayor of Wittenberg, in Augsburg made the acquaintance of Titian, in 1552 went with the duke to his new residence in Weimar , source: u.a.
