MUSEALE IKONE MIT DER GOTTESMUTTER 'ÜBER DICH FREUET SICH DIE SCHÖPFUNG' AUS DER SAMMLUNG DES WINTER PALASTES (?)
Origin: Russland, Moskau, um 1600
Technique: Einzeltafel mit zwei Rückseiten-Sponki. Kowtscheg, Eitempera auf Kreidegrund, partielle Vergoldung
Dimension: 30,7 x 26,6 cm
A VERY FINE AND RARE ICON SHOWING ‘IN THEE REJOICETH’ (HYMN TO HOLY VIRGIN) FROM THE WINTER PALACE COLLECTION (?) Russian, Moscow, circa 1600 Tempera on wood panel with kovcheg. Finely executed wich golden haloes. The shown subject deriving from a hymn attributed to St. John of Damascus and not an actual event, representing in a circular glory the Mother of God enthroned holding the Christ Child, the latter extending his hand in blessing, surrounded by angels, against a Church and the Garden of Paradise. Two groups of saints depicted in the lower part, St. John Damaskenos prominently portrayed near the throne of the Mother of God, displaying his open scroll. The composition painted in detail, mostly with tones of green and red, the wings of the angels accentuated with gold highlights. The back bearing Soviet sale label stating ‘MosGostOrg Antique and Art Department No. C2484’. On the reverse of the glazed frame traces of an exhibition label ‘EXHIBITION OF RUSSIAN ICONS ARRANGED BY HAMMER GALLERIES [.] NEW YORK 1937’. Set into a later panel (vrezka), minor areas of retouching. In the Hammer Galleries exhibition catalogue of 1937, two icons are listed (No. 16 and No. 53) with the theme ‘IN THEE REJOICETH’ (HYMN TO HOLY VIRGIN)’ with similar dimensions to the icon offered here. Both icons are referred to as being from the ‘Winter Palace Collection’. It is most likely that the icon offered here is one of the two icons mentioned by Hammer.
