A VERY FINE ICON SHOWING THE PROTECTING VEIL OF THE MOTHER OF GOD (THE POKROV WITH ST. ROMANOS THE MELODIST) Russland, 16. Jh. Russian, 16th century Holztafel mit zwei Rückseiten-Sponki. Kowtscheg, Eitempera auf Kreidegrund, Nimben Tempera on wood panel with levkas and kovcheg. Finely executed on a gold ground. The upper register shows the miraculous apparition of the Mother of God in the Church of Vlachernae in Constantinople. Two angels holding a red veil. Below, St. Romanos the Melodist displays on his open scroll the Christmas Kontakion, whereas to his left St. Andrew ‘the fool in Christ’ points out to St. Epiphanius the Virgin. The saturated colours of the garments are complimented with the pastels used for the background. Set into a later panel (vrezka), the border stripped to gesso, minimally restored. 31.2 x 25.5 cm.
