Theodor Kern was an Austrian painter. He studied from 1918 to 1923 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Josef Jungwirth, Karl Sterrer, and Alois Delug. In 1923, Kern met Anton Faistauer, whose student and close collaborator he became. In 1926, Kern worked with Faistauer on the frescoes in the foyer of the Festspielhaus in Salzburg and on the frescoes in the church in the Morzg district. In 1930, he designed the facade mural of Hallein's town hall to mark the 700th anniversary of Hallein. From 1927 to 1936, Kern was a member of the Hagenbund, with whom he also exhibited. He was also a member of the Salzburg artists' association "Der Wassermann." He had a studio in the Vienna Künstlerhaus and ran a painting school there. In 1930, he continued his studies in lithography and etching at the academy in Breslau. He travelled to Paris and Sicily and taught at Eton College in England in 1932/1933. He then lived in Vienna again. Because Kern helped persecuted friends escape after the Anschluss, he himself found himself in danger and fled to England in 1938. There he continued to work as an artist, creating sacred frescoes, stained glass windows, portraits, and sculptures in wood and stone. While his early work was influenced by Faistauer and French Classical Modernism, it later showed increasingly abstract features. From 1950 to 1955, Kern taught at the Luton Art School. He also served as an advisor to the Hitchin Art Club. Works in public spaces include: 1926 frescoes for the in-house church of the Hallein School Sisters; 1927 or 1928 frescoes in the Holy Cross Chapel of the Grafenhof lung sanatorium in Sankt Veit im Pongau of the Volksverein zur Bekämpfung der Tuberkulose im Land Salzburg (People's Association for the Fight against Tuberculosis in the Province of Salzburg); 1931 two frescoes for the parish church in Seeham.
