Heinrich Lefler, son of the painter Franz Lefler, was an Austrian painter, graphic artist, illustrator, set designer, poster artist and craftsman. As a painter he mainly created genre scenes, and as a graphic artist and illustrator he mostly created fairy tale images and illustrations similar to Art Nouveau. From 1880 to 1884 he studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts under Christian Griepenkerl, then at the Munich Art Academy under Nikolaus Gysis and Wilhelm von Diez. From 1897, Lefler worked closely with Joseph Urban, who became his brother-in-law through marriage to Lefler's sister. In 1900, Lefler, together with Urban, became the initiator and co-founder of the Hagenbund (member until 1909, first president in 1902); He designed the poster for the first and opening exhibition of the Hagenbund (I-III/1902). From 1900 to 1903 he worked under the direction of Gustav Mahler as head of equipment at the Vienna Court Opera, and from 1903 to 1910 he was a professor at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts (he was chosen over his competitor Gustav Klimt). Lefler's students included Rudolf Junk and, for a short time, Richard Gerstl. Together with Urban, Lefler created numerous critically acclaimed illustrations for fairy tale books and calendars (Gerlach publishing house), as well as the frescoes in the Vienna City Hall cellar. The Schiller Festival parade in 1905 and the Ringstraße parade on the occasion of the Kaiser's anniversary in 1908 offered further opportunities to work with Urban. Lefler also created stage sets and costumes, among others for the Metropolitan Opera in New York (1902), the Vienna Court Opera, the Vienna Volksoper (People's Opera) and for several German stages. As an artist, he designed furniture, screens, cassettes, embroidery and fans. As a poster artist, Lefler was one of the first Austrians to work on company and exhibition posters (e.g. “Auer-Licht” or for Krupp-Berndorf). In 1902, Lefler and Urban designed a 1,000 crown banknote that featured a portrait of Lefler's future wife, the opera singer Mina Wiesmüller. Lefler's works can be found in the following collections: Albertina, Vienna Museum, Austrian Theater Museum Vienna, Austrian Museum of Applied Arts Vienna, Max Reinhardt Collection at Harvard University in Massachusetts. Prizes, honors: 1900 Great Gold State Medal; honorary grave at Vienna's Zentralfriedhof (Central Cemetery); in 1932, a street in the Vienna suburb of Stadlau (today: 22nd District) was named after him. Further artists and styles: Art Deco, Design, William Morris, Arts and Crafts, Leo Slezak
PLEASE NOTE:
