The Austrian photographer Moriz Nähr is known, among other things, for his portraits of Gustav Klimt, Gustav Mahler and Ludwig Wittgenstein. He also worked at the Viennese court. 1875 – 1877, he attended the arts and crafts school and there met the future co-founder of the Secession, Maximilian Lenz, who remained a close friend for life. For financial reasons, Nähr was initially unable to study painting and went to his older brother Karl's photo studio in Schemnitz. After Karl's early death, Moriz Nähr became a guest student at the General Painting School of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna in 1878. He only stayed for two semesters, but later described himself as an academic painter. The International Exhibition of Artistic Photographs in Vienna in 1891 brought Nähr his first public recognition for his works, especially for Forest Interiors and From the Prater. Nähr was a member of the Photographic Society from 1893 and on the board from 1907. In 1908, Nähr became a member of the German Werkbund and in 1912 co-founder of the Austrian Werkbund. Nähr was friends with some members of the Hagenbund and the Vienna Secession. He is known for many photographs of the members of these associations and their studios.
