Gottfried Mairwoeger was an important representative of abstract painting in Austria. He was admitted to the master class of Josef Mikl at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna in 1971 and continued his studies with Wolfgang Hollegha in 1973. In 1974 he produced his first large-scale oil paintings on canvas and works in oil on paper. In 1976, the encounter with the American art critic Clement Greenberg at the Wentzel Gallery in Hamburg brought the decisive turn for further artistic work. In the late 1970s, influenced by second-generation Abstract Expressionism as well as Colorfield Painting (Morris Louis, Helen Frankenthaler), the Hollegha student continued the tradition of Austrian postwar abstraction in an independent manner. In the 1980s, Mairwoeger used highly diluted oil paints and worked similarly to the "soak stain technique" developed by Helen Frankenthaler on unprimed canvas. Later, the opulent color fields and color streams were replaced by a pasty painting style with sometimes strict, gestural compositional elements. At the end of the 1990s, Mairwoeger again took up the design elements of his first creative period.
