The Austrian architect, painter and graphic artist Alfred Keller studied from 1893 to 1898 at the Technical University of Graz and at the Landscape Drawing Academy in Graz. After that, in 1898, he became an "Ingenieur-Assistent” (engineering assistant) at the Graz Stadtbauamt (municipal building office) and graduated in 1899. In Vienna, he worked until 1907 as a construction clerk, from 1908 as an engineer in the Imperial-Royal Dicasterial Building Directorate. In 1908, he was employed by the Ministry of Public Works; later he worked independently. In 1904, he became a member of the Hagenbund (president 1912 - 1917). Keller, who had already travelled to India in 1897, stayed in the USA from 1913 - 1915 as an exhibition architect. Further stays abroad took him to Spain from 1920 - 1925, among other places. He hired Walter Brossmann in his Austrian studio, who was an equal partner after Keller's return, from 1926 to 1932. From 1919 to 1920, Keller worked for the magazine "Wohnungskunst", in 1927 he was an expert at the Oberlandesgericht fuer Urheberrecht (Higher State Court for Copyright), and in 1928 he was a member of the examining committee for the authorization of a civil engineer for structural and civil engineering. In 1930, he became a full professor at the Technische Hochschule Wien (Technical College Vienna) for building theory, construction economics and transport engineering and withdrew from his architectural studio. 1935 – 1936, he was dean of the faculty for architecture at the Technische Hochschule. In 1928, Keller received the Goldendes Ehrenzeichen fuer Verdienste um die Republik oesterreich (Decoration of honour in gold for services to the Republic of Austria), 1929 the Gran Premio and the Medalla de Oro in Barcelona. 1930 he was awarded the Commander's Cross (Encomienda) of the Spanish Order of Merit (Orden del Merito Civil) by King Alfonso XIII. From 1913, Keller was a member of the Austrian Werkbund and from 1920 of the Genossenschaft der bildenden Kuenstler Wiens (Cooperative of Visual Artists in Vienna). As an architect, he created residential and commercial buildings, villas and hotels as well as industrial buildings and factories, but also interiors and exhibition designs. Keller was a representative of the Heimatstil (homeland style) with references to the South German Heimatschutz movement. As a graphic artist, Keller designed catalogue covers and posters, illustrated books, and as a painter he created oil paintings and watercolours.
