Ernst Wagner was an Austrian painter, sculptor, graphic artist and writer. He received his doctorate in jurisprudence from the University of Graz and then studied from January 1901 to February 1902 in Josef Breitner's sculpture class at the Vienna School of Applied Arts and from March to May 1902 in Hans Bitterlich's sculpture class at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. Wagner moved to Munich and became part of the circle around Adolf Hildebrand. Wagner participated in the exhibitions of the Munich, Berlin and Vienna Secession and undertook study trips to Paris, Ascona and Calamotta. In 1960 he met Auguste Rodin. During World War I, Wagner was deployed at the k.u.k. Kriegspressequartier (Imperial and Royal War Press Office). From 1922 to 1938, he was a member of the Hagenbund in Vienna. From 1929 to 1936, he taught as a professor at the State Academy of Arts and Crafts in Dresden. He held lectures and seminars on cultural studies. In 1936 and 1937, he was in Italy, in 1938 in England and France, and again in Italy from 1939 to 1940. From 1940, he lived in Vienna and from 1941 in Munich. In 1951, he moved to Ammerland on Lake Starnberg. His pictures were exhibited in the galleries in Kidney Village, at Hand Goltz and in the Municipal Gallery in Munich (1952 with Hermann Ebers). The critic Hermann Bahr was fascinated by Wagner and put him on a par with Oskar Kokoschka.
