Erwin Stolz was trained as an agricultural engineer, but in his spare time he was intensively engaged in painting. During the First World War he served as an officer and came to Italy as a prisoner of war. After the end of the war he devoted himself entirely to painting. Initially working as a sign painter, industrial graphic artist and newspaper delivery man, he attended numerous courses to further his artistic education. He had contacts with Gustav Karl Beck, Erich Mallina, George Kenner, Alexander Rothaug and the artists of the Hagenbund. Stolz was also friends with the composer Josef Matthias Hauer, a musician and music theorist from the circle of Arnold Schoenberg, who was considered degenerate under the Nazis.
