James Holland worked at Davenport Pottery as a child and teenager, painting ceramics and china with flowers. In 1819, Holland moved to London, where he continued to work for pottery makers and taught drawing for architectural, marine and landscape subjects. Holland had his first independent exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts in 1824, although his painting London from Blackheath had already been exhibited in 1823. In 1830, he visited France to study and paint its architecture. From 1835 to 1843, Holland was a member of the Society of Painters in Water Colors (now the Royal Watercolor Society). He then moved to the Society of British Artists (now the Royal Society of British Artists). One of Holland's most important occupations was illustration for annuals of the time. In order to conduct studies for this, he travelled to Venice, Milan, Geneva and Paris in 1836. A trip to Portugal followed in 1837. The resulting images were published in The Tourist in Portugal. Two years later, Holland exhibited one of his Lisbon paintings at the Royal Academy of Arts. In 1845 he traveled to Rotterdam and in 1847 again to Portugal. He left the Royal Society of British Artists in 1848. Two years later, he visited Normandy and North Wales. In 1851, Holland again traveled to Geneva. From 1856 to 1858, Holland was a full member of the Society of Painters in Water Colours, which he rejoined in 1856. At that time, he undertook a study trip to Venice. In 1857, Holland exhibited for the last time.
