Franz Alt, Austrian veduta painter, brother of Rudolf von Alt and student of his father Jakob Alt. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna with Leopold Kupelwider and Josef Danhauser. From 1844 independent artist; undertook study trips to Tyrol and northern Italy, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Paris, and London. Franz Alt became known mainly as a veduta painter in the Biedermeier tradition. He was friends with Count Kázmer Miklós Esterházy de Galántha and Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach. Alt created about two thousand watercolors and oil paintings. He received commissions from the Austrian imperial family and in 1867 accompanied Archduke Ludwig Viktor, Franz Joseph's younger brother, to Spain and Portugal. In 1869, Franz Alt became a member of the Kuenstlerhaus. In 1873, together with his brother, he created the album "Vienna in the 1873 World Exhibition". At the Vienna World Exhibition (1873), Alt received the medal for art. St. Stephen's Cathedral (actually the Cathedral and Metropolitan Church of St. Stephen and All Saints) on Vienna's Stephansplatz has been the seat of a cathedral chapter since 1365, cathedral since 1469/1479 and metropolitan church of the Archbishop of Vienna since 1723. The "Steffl" is considered a symbol of Vienna and a national shrine of Austria and is dedicated to St. Stephen. The second patron saint is All Saints' Day. Pulpit by Anton Pilgram.
