Wilhelm List was an Art Nouveau painter and graphic artist who was influenced by impressionist painting. His paintings are technically similar to those of Gustav Klimt. In terms of subject matter, List dealt with portraits, landscapes and genre paintings, often with fairytale or mythological subjects. His graphics, woodcuts and lithographs are particularly important. Wilhelm List was the son of Karl Maximilian List, engineer of the city building authority, and his wife Sidonie Schneider. First he studied philosophy at the University of Vienna and then, from 1885 to 1889, studied at the Vienna Academy with Christian Griepenkerl, then in Munich and with William Adolphe Bouguereau in Paris. From 1893 List exhibited at the Kuenstlerhaus in Vienna; In 1896 he became a member. As early as 1897, however, he became a co-founder of the Vienna Secession and regularly exhibited there. He edited Ver Sacrum in 1900/01 and was one of the twelve illustrators for the 1902 Vienna Secession catalog dedicated to Beethoven. In 1905 List left the Secession together with the artists around Gustav Klimt. In the portrait concept, parallels to Alphonse Osbert, Gustav Klimt and Edmond Aman-Jean. Corresponded with Gustav Mahler.
