Er wird 1924 als Sohn jüdischer Einwanderer, die um die Jahrhundertwende aus Russland nach Amerika emigrierten, in New Britain (Connecticut, USA) geboren. Bereits mit 15 Jahren beginnt er ein vierjähriges Kunststudium an der Art School in Hartford, Connecticut. Seine Lehrer sind F.S. Hind und Howard Ahrens. Er widmet sich der Malerei bei Professor Henrik Mayer und besucht die Bildhauerklasse von Henry Kreis. 1947 wechselt er an die Museum School, Boston. Hier arbeitet er u.a. bei Karl Zerbe. Dieser vermittelt die Malerei Heckels oder Beckmanns und lässt zudem seine Schüler den abstrakten Expressionismus der amerikanischen Schule mit Willem de Kooning, Robert Motherwell, Sam Francis nachvollziehen. 1948 kommt Shapiro nach New York an die Art Students League, sein Lehrer ist u.a. Reginald Marsh. 1950 kehrt Shapiro nach Boston zurück. An der freien Akademie, der Butera School of Art, belegt er Kurse, sein privater Mentor ist Hyman Bloom. 1955 reist er als Fulbright-Stipendiat glücklich nach Europa. Er arbeitet im Atelier 17 bei Stanley W. Hayter. Miró, Chagall und Giacometti lernt er erkennen. Corneille und de Nicolas Staël und viele andere werden seine Freunde. Er bezieht ein eigenes Atelier im Impasse Ronsin. Brancusi und Tinguely sind seine unmittelbaren Nachbarn.

He was born in New Britain (Connecticut, USA) in 1924, the son of Jewish immigrants who emigrated from Russia to America at the turn of the century. At the age of 15, he begins four years of art studies at the Art School in Hartford, Connecticut. His teachers were F.S. Hind and Howard Ahrens. He devotes himself to painting with Professor Henrik Mayer and attends the sculpture class of Henry Kreis. In 1947 he transfers to the Museum School, Boston. Here he works with Karl Zerbe, among others. Zerbe taught him the painting of Heckel and Beckmann and also allowed his students to experience the abstract expressionism of the American School with Willem de Kooning, Robert Motherwell and Sam Francis. In 1948 Shapiro comes to New York to the Art Students League, his teacher is among others Reginald Marsh. In 1950 Shapiro returns to Boston. At the free academy, the Butera School of Art, he takes courses, his private mentor is Hyman Bloom. In 1955, he happily travels to Europe as a Fulbright scholar. He works in studio 17 with Stanley W. Hayter. Miró, Chagall and Giacometti he learns to recognize. Corneille and de Nicolas Staël and many others become his friends. He moves into his own studio in Impasse Ronsin. Brancusi and Tinguely are his immediate neighbors.
