Zizenhausen figure, Basel, 19th c., "Totentanz" (Dance of Death) by Anton Sohn, 1st h. 19th century, colored clay, "Death of the forest brother", height 13 x 10 cm, right hand broken off.
The model for these groups of figures were the engravings of the Swiss-German engraver and publisher Matthäus Merian published in 1621. These engravings go back to a painting from the late Middle Ages, which was painted on the inside of the cemetery wall near the Predigerkirche in Basel.
