Museal Black Forest apostle clock, Gordian Hettich Sohn, Furtwangen, Black Forest around 1890. Walnut, carved and partially painted, with brass. On stepped base, richly detailed carved case in the shape of a cathedral with Gothic elements, on whose balustrade the twelve apostles appear on the hour. Brass dial with Arabic minute scale and Arabic minute ring, brass hands. Metal spindled movement with strike on three tone springs and release of the apostle automaton on the hour. Marked on movement "G.H.S.F. 25". Good working condition. Wall console from a later period. Clock h. 87,5, w. 41,5, d. 24,5, console h. 27, w. 48,5, d. 30,5 cm. Pendulum and key.
Probably the most famous clock with an apostle automaton is the Prague Town Hall Clock, which has had this mechanism since the mid-19th century. Another rare automaton clock from the house of Gordian Hettich Sohn with figures of the four evangelists and Peter is in the Badisches Landesmuseum, Bruchsal Castle.
Provenance: Private collection Rastatt.
