A MONUMENTAL ICON SHOWING ST. NICHOLAS OF MOZHAYSK FROM A CHURCH ICONOSTASIS Russian, dated 1896 Oil on metal. The background and border ornately incised and punched with engraved stylized patterns emulating the metal oklads of contemporary icons. On the lower border Cyrillic inscription: This icon was painted on 14 May 1896 to commemorate the coronation of His Majesty Emperor Tsar Nikolai Alexandrovich, autocrat of Russia and Tsarina Alexandra Fyodorovna, on the initiative of Abbot and priest Wizhevsky with the support of the landowners Kelepovsky and parishioners of the Church of St. Michael the Archangel in the village of Mel’nitsa.’ 144 x 92 cm (without frame).
