A LARGE ICON SHOWING THE ANNUNCIATION OF THE MOTHER OF GOD AND SCENES FROM THE AKATHIST Greek, Crete, 17th century Tempera on wood panel. Finely executed on a gold ground. The central scene depicted against a stylised architectural background, the Archangel Gabriel advancing towards the Mother of God holding a messenger’s staff in his left hand and making a gesture of blessing with his right hand. The Mother of God holding a ball of thread and a book, wearing a deep purple-brown mantle, alluding to her divine destiny, the Holy Spirit represented descending in a ray of light upon her from a celestial segment of the sky. Vertical crack restored, areas of retouching. 64 x 55.5 cm. Christi zu spinnen und seinen Leib zu weben. Ihr rotes, blutfarbenes Gewand verweist Literature: Eikon. Ikonen des 15. bis 19.
