AN IMPORTANT ICON SHOWING THE SAVIOUR WITH THE FEARSOME EYE WITH A SILVER-GILT AND NIELLO RIZA Russland, 16. Jh. (Ikone), Russland, St. Petersburg, 1816 (Riza) Russian, 16th century (icon), Russian, St. Petersburg, 1816 (riza) Holztafel mit zwei Rückseiten-Sponki, verso Stoffabdeckung. Doppeltes Kowtscheg, Eitempera Tempera on wood panel with double kovcheg. Christ portrayed bust-length, facing the viewer directly, with a severe expression, his hair terminating in curls laid on his left shoulder. Painted traditionally with deep colours. Overlaid with heavy silver-gilt and niello riza, chased with a repetitive floral motif. The halo and the name plates with niello lettering. Marked with city hallmark, assayer’s mark, 84 standard and master’s mark ‘PR’ in Cyrillic. The border restored. On the reverse old label: ‘STAMP OF THE HEAD OF ST. PETERSBURG DISTRICT NOBILITY’. 31.8 x 25.8 cm.
