A BOOK OF GOSPELS Russian, 1735 The cover applied with metal placques showing the Baptism and the four evangelists. Handwritten dedication inscription: ‘This holy Gospel was restored for the second time at the expense of Georgij Albert, a local merchant, and Andrej Sretitc, also a merchant and senator from Jegra (=Eger). The first one tried to buy velvet from his father-in-law Vasilij Subbotic, a burgher and bookbinder in Budim (= Budapest), who had embellished more than 14 gospels with such velvet, because he had such (fabrics) in large numbers; he had bought them in Budim at an auction on the occasion of the blessed memory of the duchess, the wife of the late Archduke Josef Palatin, née Pavlovitsch, a Russian princess. The second paid for the work to the bookbinder named Kupfer 5 ordinary (?) Florentines under the priest Maxim Gankovic, born in the cameral town of Kula and who came here from Szent Tomas for the priestly service in 1841, on 23 September, and (under) the epitropist Nikolaj Garasij, born in Serbia in the town of Garasi (= near Kragujevac) and until now Popovic, salt merchant in Jegra. Recorded in Jegra on the 1st day of April in the year 1845’. 40 x 27 cm.
