The collection of Prof. Dr. Rudolph Ewerhart (1928-2022).

Since 1982 Rudolf Ewerhart lived with his wife Helene in the late baroque Burghaus Wassenach near the Laacher See, the aristocratic residence of the Knights of Kolb built from 1772-1775. Parallel to the extensive renovation

In 1996 he organized exclusive concerts in the “Music in the Burghaus Wassenach” series in the hall of the mansion, at which newly acquired or freshly restored instruments from the collection in the were the focus.

UNFRETTED GERMAN CLAVICHORD BY CHRISTOPH FRIEDRICH SCHMAHL, REGENSBURG 1805
The unfretted walnut veneered clavichord was built by Christoph Friedrich Schmahl (1739-1814), Regensburg. He was a family member of the Schmahl family of organ and keyboard instrument makers. The soundboard bears the signature "C. Friedrich. Schmahl. In. Regensburg. 1805.". Christoph Friedrich Schmahl, is the cousin of Johann Matthäus Schmahl (1734-1793, who built the famous tangent pianos with his father-in-law Franz Jacob Späth (1714-1786) in Ulm. They signed as "Späth & Schmahl". Johann Matthäus Schmahl is also credited with fortepianos in the form of a lying harp.
The rear resting pad of the keys is made of woolen cloth on parchment paper, on which excerpts of a still unexamined text are visible.
The keyboard (FF-c4) has a 3-octave-span of 47.7cm.
The tangents are made of brass.
