Künstlerinfo: bedeut. italienischer Kupferstecher, Zeichner, Archäologe, Verleger, Architekt und Architekturtheoretiker (1720 Mogliano Veneto bei Treviso bis 1778 Rom), Ausbildung als Architekt am Magistrato delle Acque bei seinem Onkel Matteo Lucchesi in Venedig, anschließend Ausbildung zum Bühnenbildner bei Giovanni Scalfarotto und Radierung und Perspektive bei Carlo Zucchi, 1740 Reise als Zeichner im Gefolge des venezianischen Gesandten beim Vatikan Marco Foscarini nach Rom, hier zunächst als Architekt tätig, aus wirtschaftlichen Gründen Hinwendung zur Malerei und Kupferstich, 1741 Schüler in Kupferstich und Radierung bei dem Vedutenzeichner Giuseppe Vasi, 1743 Veröffentlichung der erste Kupferstichvedutensammlung, 1743 über Neapel und die eben begonnenen Ausgrabungen von Pompeji Rückreise nach Venedig, 1743-47 Aufenthalt bei Giovanni Battista Tiepolo in Venedig, 1748 wieder in Rom und schuf bis 1774 weitere Folgen von Veduten barocker und antiker Baudenkmäler, gefördert von Papst Benedikt XIV., 1757 Aufnahme in die Londoner Gesellschaft für Altertumsforscher, 1761 Gründung des eigenen Verlags und Aufnahme in die Accademia di San Luca, 1763 Auftrag von Papst Clemens XIII. zum Umbau des Chores von San Giovanni in Laterano, 1764 durch Kardinal Giovanni Battista Rezzonico mit der Neugestaltung von Santa Maria del Priorato beauftragt, 1767 durch Clemens XIII. zum Ritter ernannt, signierte seine Werke fortan mit "Cavalier Piranesi F.", Quelle: Thieme-Becker und Internet.

Italian engraver, draughtsman, archaeologist, publisher, architect and architectural theorist (1720 Mogliano Veneto near Treviso to 1778 Rome), trained as an architect at the Magistrato delle Acque with his uncle Matteo Lucchesi in Venice, subsequently trained as a stage designer under Giovanni Scalfarotto and etching and perspective under Carlo Zucchi, travelled to Rome in 1740 as a draughtsman in the entourage of the Venetian envoy to the Vatican Marco Foscarini, initially working as an architect, turned to painting and engraving for economic reasons, 1741 studied engraving and etching with the veduta draughtsman Giuseppe Vasi, 1743 published the first collection of engraved vedutas, 1743 travelled back to Venice via Naples and the excavations of Pompeii that had just begun, 1743-47 stayed with Giovanni Battista Tiepolo in Venice, 1748 returned to Rome and created further series of vedutas of Baroque and ancient monuments until 1774, sponsored by Pope Benedict XIV., 1757 admitted to the London Society of Antiquarians, 1761 founded his own publishing house and admitted to the Accademia di San Luca, 1763 commissioned by Pope Clement XIII to remodel the choir of San Giovanni in Laterano, 1764 commissioned by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Rezzonico to remodel Santa Maria del Priorato, 1767 knighted by Clement XIII, henceforth signed his works "Cavalier Piranesi F.", source: Thieme-Becker and Internet.
