Half-figure portrait of an elegant young woman in a stately robe lavishly adorned with pearls, the brunette beauty captured in half-profile presents herself with her hair artfully coiffed back, into which pearls have been woven, the lavish décolleté framing a blue silk dress with delicate lace trimming, a delicate tulle veil decorated with gold embroidery perfecting the back of the dress, while shoulders and front with elaborate decorations of pearl strands and garlands round off the lady's stately appearance, finely glazed portrait painting with beautiful effects and excellently captured light, oil on canvas c. 1750, unsigned, in Thomas Hudson's œuvre there are numerous similar portraits such as that of "Margaret Lady Oxenden", that of "Maria Bampfylde" or that of "Francis Campion". Francis Campion" or that of "Anne Atwood" - all of them have in common the type of depiction, the pose and the luxuriant pearl ornamentation as well as the excellent rendering of the materiality; the almost three-dimensional suggestion of a painted deep passepartout is also frequently found in Hudson's work, Craquelure, backed loss in the canvas, old mounted and restored, paint burst, somewhat in need of restoration, framed in gold moulding with brass frame label "Sir Thomas Hudson 1701-1779", folding dimensions approx. 76 x 63,5 cm. Artist's impression: British portrait painter and art collector (1701 Devon to 1779 Twickenham near London), he was regarded as a portraitist of the British establishment, pupil of Sir Godfrey Kneller (1646-1723), Jonathan Richardson (1665-1745), his most labour-intensive and successful working period was between 1740 and 1760, when he ran a workshop with several employees to cope with demand, active as portraitist of the royal family around George II, 1749 and 1756 produced two portraits of George Frideric Handel (1685-1759) in his old age, member of the London Society of Artists, associated with William Hogarth, Allan Ramsay, John Michael Rysbrack and Francis Hayman, teacher of Joshua Reynolds, gave up painting in 1767 and became an art collector, worked at Cross Deep in Twickenham, Source: Thieme-Becker, Saur "Bio-Bibliographisches Künstlerlexikon", Müller-Singer, Seubert, Müller-Klunzinger, Nagler and Wikipedia.
