Painter and graphic artist (1912 Hagen to 1999 San José/Ibiza), 1931-34 studied commercial art at the Handwerker und Kunstgewerbeschule Dortmund, 1935-39 worked as a freelance painter, after the seizure of power by the National Socialists demoted as "Kulturbolschewist" and expelled from the Reichskammer der bildenden Künste, Worked as a technical draughtsman during the war; first solo exhibition in Wuppertal in 1947; 1958-60 professorship at the Hochschule der Bildenden Künste in Hamburg; 1959 took part in documenta II in Kassel; 1961 took part in the 29th Venice Biennale.
