Artist info: German painter and graphic artist (1894 Mönchengladbach O.T. Rheydt/Rhineland until 1961 Essen), from 1901 childhood in Mülheim an der Ruhr, 1913 study trip to Holland with his friend Otto Pankok, studied 1914 at the academy in Kassel with Hans Olde and Rudolf Siegmund, 1914 war volunteer, studied from 1919 at the academy in Weimar with Walther Klemm, studied 1921-23 at the Bauhaus Weimar with Lyonel Feininger, undertook several study trips to Italy, From 1926 he worked in Düsseldorf, later in Paris; in 1930 he was awarded the Rome Prize and stayed at the Villa Massimo in Rome; later he studied in Sant'Angelo on Ischia; from 1933-45 he was banned as "degenerate"; after 1945 he worked briefly in Schwarzenbach an der Saale; from 1951 he worked alternately in Munich (in winter) and in Ischia in summer; he had numerous exhibitions, including the documenten in Kassel.including the documenten in Kassel and the Venice Biennale, Source: Vollmer and Internet.
