Artist info: important German painter and graphic artist. Painter and graphic artist (1887 Berlin to 1975 Unterlengenhardt/Black Forest), pioneer of abstract art in Germany, childhood in Ilmenau/Thuringia, from 1903 apprenticeship as porcelain modeller in a porcelain factory in Ilmenau, 1906-07 studies with Grand Ducal scholarship at the art school Weimar with Henry van de Velde, Hans Olde, Ludwig von Hofmann and Sascha Schneider, 1908-09 studied at the Dresden Academy under Richard Müller and Gotthardt Kuehl, 1909-10 studied at the Munich Academy under Franz von Stuck, from 1912 studied at the Stuttgart Academy and was a pupil of Adolf Hölzel, 1915-17 military service in World War I, from 1920 freelance porcelain modeller in the porcelain factory in Ilmenau. From the 1920s he worked as a freelance artist in Stuttgart and in 1921 he founded a 'Lehrwerkstatt für Neue Kunst' (training workshop for new art), in 1926 he went on a study trip to Paris, he was a member of the 'Reichsverband Bildender Künstler Deutschlands' (Reichsverband Bildender Künstler Deutschlands), he maintained numerous contacts with important artists, including Piet Mondrian, Adolf Loos, Wassily Kandinsky and George Grosz, in 1930 he founded the seminar for 'Absolute Malerei' (absolute painting) at the 'Volkshochschule Stuttgart' (adult education centre), in 1936-45 he was ostracised as 'degenerate', banned from teaching and exhibitions and some of his works were confiscated, Resettlement to Hornstaad on Lake Constance and painting stays in Hemmenhofen, 1943 destruction of his studio in Stuttgart, from 1946 lecturer at the Adult Education Centre in Stuttgart, 1957 awarded the title of professor and moved to Stuttgart, 1964 guest of honour at the German Academy in Rome Villa Massimo, received numerous honours, including the Ströher Prize for non-objective art in 1950 and the Federal Cross of Merit in 1972, active in Stuttgart, Lake Constance and Bad Liebenzell, Source: Vollmer, AKL, "Franz von Stuck und seine Schüler", Matrikel der Münchner Akademie, Dressler and Internet.
