Oriental envoys present Emperor Barbarossa with various precious gifts and monks explain a precious clock to him, below the depiction text, sheet 4 from the cycle "Aus dem Leben Ottos von Wittelsbach", copperplate engraving, inscribed lower left "P. Cand. pinxit. C. G. ab Amling delin et sculpsit. 1699", clean impression, a little bit brownish, plate dimensions ca. 28 x 28,8 cm, sheet dimensions ca. 32,5 x 39,7 cm. Artist info: also Karl Gustav von (ab) Ambling resp. Ameling, German engraver and draughtsman (ca. 1650 Nuremberg to 1703 Munich), early move to Bavaria (probably Munich?), pupil of the Jesuitengymnasium and occupation with engraving, with support of the Elector of Bavaria engraver training in Liège, Antwerp and Paris, 1670 stay in Bonn, from 1671 electoral court engraver in Munich, calls himself from ca. 1677 "von (ab) Amling", but not elevated to the peerage until 1699, 1697 appointed Bavarian chamberlain, from 1693 occupied with the tapestry cartoons after P. Candid (Wittelsbach History, Months, Seasons, Day and Night) which had been hanging in the arcades of the Munich Court Garden since 1650, produced a series of engravings for them on behalf of the Elector from 1695 onwards, source: AKL, Thieme-Becker and Internet.
