Max Valentin, Orpheus with Lyre
circa 1900, signed on verso "M. Valentin", bronze brown patinated, Orpheus sitting on a rock with the lyre given to him by Apollo, with whose enchanting playing and singing he could charm everything and everyone, calm wild animals, conquer enemies and even tame the raging sea, here depicted with two lions resting peacefully at his feet, on hexagonal faceted base, mounting of the lyre somewhat loose, otherwise in good condition for age, h 39 cm, l 50 cm. Artist info: German sculptor and designer, (1875 Fürstenwalde - 1931 Berlin), studied at the Berlin Art Academy under Ludwig Manzel (1894-1908 both as a pupil and as a collaborator), afterwards freelance, 1904-1918 regularly at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition, he mainly created small-format sculptures, sometimes executed by Rosenthal or Goldscheider.
