Late 19th c., unsigned, the foundry mark BL incised under the plinth, bronze brown patinated, Orpheus as a semi-nude with a cloth flowing around him and his head crowned with laurel, a lyre in his raised hand, at his feet a panther pacified by the playing of his lyre, on a stepped and fluted plinth with naturalistically designed surface, in parts very slightly rubbed, otherwise in very good condition due to its age, h total 42 cm. Artist info: French sculptor (1846 Paris to 1928 ibid.), was a pupil of Mathurin Moreau and a member of the Sociétaire des Artistes Français, exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon from 1877 and was represented at the 1900 World's Fair in Paris, with his brother Etienne Gossin he ran a workshop for terracotta figures and groups.
