Port scene with bargeman, glazed painting with diluted colours and brisk brushwork, oil on paper on canvas, beginning of 20th cent, monogrammed "WS" lower right, stamp "Düsseldorfer Kunstsalon" on the reverse, the ground yellowed, slightly in need of cleaning, framed in a beautiful, somewhat damaged gold stucco frame, folding dimensions approx. 38.5 x 53.5 cm. Artist's info: German animal and genre painter as well as etcher (1866 Wesel to 1933 Düsseldorf), from 1872 living in Cologne, from 1884 studied at the Düsseldorf academy under Heinrich Lauenstein, Adolf Schill and Hugo Crola, 1886-94 master pupil of Peter Janssen, 1896-1930/31 member of the Düsseldorf artists' association 'Malkasten' as well as member of the 'Freie Vereinigung Düsseldorfer Künstler', promoted by Eduard Schulte, in the 1st World War as war painter in France and Germany. During World War I he worked as a war painter in France and Belgium, received numerous honours, among others the gold medal at the World Exhibition St. Louis in 1904.
