Lively street scene with traders and craftsmen hawking their wares and two minarets visible in the background, Wikipedia writes about his works created in the Orient: "Although it was still rare at that time to deal with oriental motifs, Macco's numerous works in particular, which were created in the course of his journeys to the Orient in Athens, Constantinople, Baalbek, Jerusalem, Cairo and Mecca, soon became among the most sought-after of his art objects."Pastose painting in powerful colours, oil on canvas, signed and dated on the lower right "Georg Macco 1905", on the back of the stretcher inscribed "Georg Macco Düsseldorf" and partly overtitled "In Alt-Kairo", on a fragmentary label inscribed "(Zur freun)dlichen Erinnerung an die Orientreise 1905 Georg Macco" and further illegibly inscribed, discreet craquelure, minor retouching, framed in Florentine moulding, folding dimensions approx. 40 x 53 cm. Artist's info: actually Georg Friedrich Macco, German landscape painter, illustrator and orientalist. Landscape painter, illustrator and orientalist (1863 Aachen to 1933 Genoa), studied 1880-87 at the academy of arts in Düsseldorf under Hugo Crola, Heinrich Lauenstein, Johann Peter Theodor Janssen and 1883-87 as master pupil under Eugen Dücker, 1883 stay in the painter colony Kleinsassen, 1887-88 studies of aesthetics, astronomy, geology and zoology at the university in Munich, from 1888 freelance in Düsseldorf, went on study trips to the Rhön, the Alps, Norway and Spitzbergen as well as Italy and after 1900 to the Orient, at times worked for the magazine 'Gartenlaube', received numerous honours, among others gold medal Munich 1894, silver medal London 1899, diploma Barcelona 1906 and the Prussian Order of the Red Eagle IV. Class, attended exhibitions in Barcelona, Berlin, Düsseldorf, London and Munich, 1886-1933 member of the Düsseldorf artists' association "Malkasten" and member of the Allgemeine Deutsche Kunstgenossenschaft, the Vereinigung Düsseldorfer Künstler as well as the Freie Vereinigung Düsseldorfer Künstler, active in Düsseldorf, Source: Thieme-Becker, Vollmer, Dressler, Bénézit, Boetticher, Saur, Bruckmann "Lexikon der Düsseldorfer Malerschule", Müller-Singer and Wikipedia.
