Prof. Berthold Hellingrath, St. Mary's Church in Gdansk
imposing view of the church, which stands out from the roofscape of Gdansk and was built in the brick Gothic style from 1343-1502, slightly impasto painting in warm colours, oil on hardboard, c. 1950, signed lower right "B. Hellingrath", framed, folding dimensions approx. 62 x 53 cm. Artist's info: German landscape painter, etcher and sculptor (1877 Elbing until 1954 Hannover), childhood in Gdansk, pupil of the art school and the industrial school in Gdansk, 1899-1905 studied at the academy of arts in Dresden under Carl Bantzer, master pupil of Gotthard Kuehl, first active in Dresden, from 1907 own studio here, then in Gdansk-Langfuhr, from 1925 lecturer and from 1928 prof. At the Technical University of Hanover and living in Hanover-Waldhausen, 1937 expelled from the Reichskulturkammer (Reich Chamber of Culture) and banned from painting because of "painting not in keeping with his style", numerous works destroyed by bombing during the Second World War, undertook numerous study trips through Germany and the whole of Europe, exhibited at the Great Berlin and Munich Art Exhibitions and at the Glaspalast in Munich, exhibitions in Dresden, Chemnitz, Leipzig and Düsseldorf, member of the Deutscher Künstlerbund Weimar, Source: Thieme-Becker, Vollmer, Dressler and Internet.
