melancholic morning mood with sailing boat going out on a turbulent sea, W. Schäfer wrote in 1900 in the quarterly journal "Die Rheinlande" "... [Dirks is] ... neither heroic nor romantic. When he went out from his Sylt, he wanted to learn his trade, nothing more. What he could paint, he carried in himself as an indelible image of his youth: the landscape and the sea of his homeland. Because he never painted anything else, he remained simple, almost heartfelt. He felt the sea not as a strange, uncanny force, but as a familiar element of life. Whether its waves chased in the storm, whether they shimmered gloriously in the sun or glowed colourfully in the light of the lanterns: He saw it without reflections. Artist info: actually Andreas Carl (Karl) Nicolaus Dirks, German landscape and marine painter.
