August Schleich, smoke painting "Hare"
Depiction of a hare's head in the round mirror of a plate, soot varnished on ceramic plate, smoke painting c. 1850, inconspicuously signed "Schleich" lower right, suspension attached to the reverse, original retouching in brown oil paint, traces of age, counterpart to the previous and following position, diameter of the plate c. 22.5 cm. Artist's info: called "Schleichgustel", Germ. Animal draughtsman, etcher, lithographer and porcelain painter (1814 Munich to 1865 Munich), son and pupil of the reproduction engraver Johann Carl Schleich (1759-1842), further education at the Munich academy, in the 1840s invention of "smoke painting", active in Munich, Source: Thieme-Becker, Saur "Bio-Bibliographisches Künstlerlexikon", "Die Gartenlaube" of 1867, issue 20, Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie, Nagler, Müller-Singer, Seubert, Müller-Klunzinger, Bruckmann "Münchner Maler des 19./20th century" and Internet.
