Johann Baptist Kirner, attr, Mother with Child in the Mountains
Young mother in traditional Italian costume nursing an infant, Italian mountain backdrop in the background, fine, detailed genre painting, oil on canvas, 1st half 19th c., unsigned, inscribed in pencil on the reverse: "v. Kirner in Rom", somewhat plastered, minor craquelures, somewhat in need of restoration, framed, folding dimensions approx. 24.5 x 18.5 cm. Artist's info: German painter (1806 Furtwangen in the Black Forest until 1866 Augsburg), since 1822 at the art school in Augsburg, awarded with prize medals 1822 and 1823, since 1824 studies of history painting at the academy of arts in Munich under Peter von Cornelius and Clemens von Zimmermann, 1829 study trip to Switzerland, 1832 to 1837 stay in Rome, 1840 appointment as grand ducal court painter of Baden, from 1844 settlement in Munich, 1856 appointment as honorary member of the academy of arts in Munich, sources: Thieme-Becker, Wikipedia.
