Rudolf Hellwag, "Venedig"
A street scene from Venice with strollers and traders under a blue summer sky, painted with little impasto and a loose brushstroke, oil on cardboard, signed lower right "R. Hellwag", inscribed and dated on the reverse "Venedig 1895", with gallery stamp "Galerie W. Wagenmann", somewhat plastered, somewhat in need of cleaning, framed, folding dimensions approx. 34.5 x 42.5 cm. Artist info: German landscape and marine painter (1867 Innsbruck to 1942 Berlin), studied at the art academies in Munich and Karlsruhe under Ferdinand Keller and Gustav Schönleber, study trips to the North Sea and Baltic Sea coast, to Sweden, Norway, New York and Italy, from 1900 longer stays in Cornwall (St. Yves) and London, from 1903 resident in London, 1894 to 1914 exhibitions in the Munich Glass Palace and the Great Berlin Art Exhibition, 1921 and 1922 in the Berlin Secession, also in Darmstadt, Dresden, Düsseldorf and Stuttgart, from 1906 full member of the German Artists' Association, Source: Thieme-Becker, Wikipedia.
