detailed drawing of a sitting orangutan, pencil on paper, probably late 19th c., signed or inscribed "W. Kuhnert" lower right, on the back of the frame dedication "Meinen lieben Klaus und meiner lieben Ebba zur Verlobung 24. Nov.(19)57 von Onkel Arno Kipp", evenly browned and minimally stained, framed behind glass, sheet dimensions approx. 12.2 x 15 cm. Artist's info: actually Friedrich Wilhelm Karl Kuhnert, called "Löwen-Kuhnert", important German animal painter, illustrator, draughtsman. Animal painter, illustrator, draughtsman and etcher (1865 Oppeln to 1926 Flims in Grisons), 1883-87 scholarship holder and pupil of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Berlin under Ferdinand Bellermann and Paul Friedrich Meyerheim, due to his preference for the depiction of tropical animals, especially lions and their study in the wild (Egypt, South Africa, India), Kuhnert became the most important and sought-after illustrator (e.g. "Das Tierleben Erde").e.g. "Das Tierleben der Erde" by Haacke) and painter of this genre of his time, member of the Verein Berliner Künstler, the Verband Deutscher Illustratoren and the Allgemeine Deutsche Kunstgenossenschaft, active in Berlin, Source: Thieme-Becker, Saur "Bio-Bibliographisches Künstlerlexikon", Müller-Singer, Dressler and Wikipedia.
