Artist info: important German painter, graphic artist and artist. (1861 Darmstadt until 1945 Pillnitz near Dresden), studied 1883-86 at the academy of arts in Dresden under his uncle Heinrich Hofmann (1824-1911) and Friedrich Preller the younger (1838-1901), 1886-88 at the academy of arts in Karlsruhe, where he was master pupil of Ferdinand Keller, afterwards he studied for a short time in Munich, 1889-90 at the Académie Julian Paris and influenced by Pierre Puvis de Chavannes (1824-1898), from 1890 freelance in Berlin and, together with Lovis Corinth, Max Liebermann, Max Klinger and Walter Leistikow, member of the 'Elf' association, maintained friendships with Gerhart Hauptmann and Eugen Bracht, 1894-1901 study trips and stays, among others in Rome, Naples and influenced by the work of Hans von Marées (1837-1887), 1895 travels to Asia Minor (Greece and Turkey) with his uncle and future father-in-law Reinhard Kekulé von Stradonitz (1839-1911), from 1895 works for the magazine "Pan", 1898 founding member of the Berlin Secession, from 1903 professor at the Weimar School of Art and forerunner of Harry Graf Kessler's "New Weimar" movement, 1903-14 summer residence in Fiesole near Florence, 1907 trip to Greece with Gerhart Hauptmann, 1916-31 professor at the Dresden Academy and resident in Dresden-Pillnitz, corresponding member of the Munich Secession, member of the German Artists' Association Weimar, awarded the degrees of Dr. phil. h.c. and Geheimmann. phil. h.c. and Privy Councillor, represented in numerous museums, partly defamed as "degenerate" in 1937, source: Thieme-Becker, Vollmer, Dressler and Wikipedia, among others.
