After Ferdinand Hodler, "Der Holzfäller"
A woodcutter cutting down a tree with an axe, stamped "R. Piper & Co. Verlag München", collotype on light cardboard, dated and signed in the image lower right "1910 F. Hodler", inscribed "Der Holzfäller", "Ferdinand Hodler" and "Le Bucheron" below the image, foxing, image dimensions approx. 37,5 x 30,5 cm, sheet dimensions approx. 54,5 x 45 cm. Artist's info: Important Swiss painter of Symbolism and Art Nouveau (1853 Bern to 1918 Geneva), from 1868 apprenticeship as veduta painter in Thum, from 1871 pupil of Ferdinand Sommer, later with Barthélemy Menn, 1878-79 trip to Spain, 1885 first solo exhibition in Geneva, attended hundreds of exhibitions in the following years, achieved fame in 1889 with his painting 'The Night', received numerous honours in Paris, Munich and Venice, 1892 joined the Rosicrucians, 1900 gold medal at the World Exhibition in Paris and member of the Vienna Secession, 1904 member of the Munich Secession, 1915 appointed honorary doctor of the University of Basel and 1916 professor at the École des Beaux-Arts in Geneva, worked in Gurzelen, Source: Thieme-Becker, Wikipedia and Internet.
