W.", portfolio stained and wings torn off, leaves somewhat browned and finger-marked, sheet dimensions c. 34 x 48 cm. Artist's info: actually Hugo Reinhold Karl Johann Höppener, German painter, draughtsman, illustrator, architect and book decoration artist (1868 Lübeck to 1948 Woltersdorf), pupil of the Lübeck industrial school, studied briefly at the Munich academy in 1887, afterwards pupil and disciple of the painter and nature apostle Karl Wilhelm Diefenbach (1851-1913) in Höllriegelskreuth, called himself "Fidus (Eng. : The Faithful)" in reverence of his teacher.Around 1900 he was one of the most famous artists in Germany and one of the "fathers of German Art Nouveau". Among other things, he worked for the Munich magazines "Jugend" and "Simplicissimus" as well as the Berlin magazine "Pan", in 1943 he was appointed professor h.c., worked in Berlin, Munich, Monte Verita and Woltersdorf-Schönblick, Source: Thieme-Becker, Vollmer, Dressler, Matrikel der Münchner Akademie, Wikipedia and Internet.
