View of the town of Soest in Westphalia with its fortifications and churches from a slight hill, in the foreground a scenery of figures, cartouche at the top centre and here titled "Soest", each flanked by a coat of arms, from "Civitates orbis terrarum", coloured copper engraving, c. 1580, fold mark at the centre, partially browned, mounted in passepartout, dimensions of depiction approx. 32,5 x 47,5 cm, sheet dimensions ca. 41 x 53 cm. Info: In cooperation of Frans Hogenberg (German engraver and etcher, 1535 Mecheln to 1590 Cologne) and Georg Braun (German theologian, canon and publisher, 1541 Cologne to 1622 Cologne) the city view book "Civitates Orbis Terrarum" (Schefold translated the title with: Beschreibung und Contrafactur der Vornembster Stät der Welt)." with ultimately 600 realistic city views and city plans, the work was published in six volumes in the period 1572-1618, whereby the copperplate engravings of volumes 1-4 came from Hogenberg, after his death Simon Novellanus supplied the engravings for volumes 5 and 6, the printing plates later came into the possession of the Dutch mapmaker Jan Jansson, who reissued them with various modifications in Amsterdam in 1657, Source: Thieme-Becker and Internet.
