Artist info: German sculptor (1911 Berlin to 1997), attended the Köllnische Gymnasium (Berlin-Mitte), then apprenticeship as a stonemason (until 1934), during which he gained knowledge of restorations in palaces and museum buildings, at the same time (1926-1929) training at the Charlottenburg School of Applied Arts, from 1934-1940 studied sculpture at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste, oriented himself not only to the prominent trends of the time but also to Lehmbruck, Barlach and Kolbe, 1942 military service (interruptions for studies in Palermo), 1943 expelled from the Reichskunstkammer because of his marriage to his "non-Aryan" wife and permanently transferred to the front in Italy, American imprisonment, 1945 returns and takes over a studio in Dresden, from 1949 again lives in Berlin, exhibitions and prizes followed, as well as a professorship at the Chair of Plastic Design at the Technical University of Berlin, 1987 retirement, Reuter held on to a classical-figurative conception of sculpture for most of his life and, in a charming way, refused the spirit of the times for a long time, only late on did he tentatively begin to tread paths towards abstraction.
