End 19th c., signed on the plinth "A. Gaudez.", titled on the recto "L'Homme Est En Mer - Victor Hugo" (The Man is at Sea), depiction based on the poem "Les pauvres gens" by the writer and politician Victor Hugo, depicting mother Jeannie, with an infant in her arms, in front of a rock by the sea, her feet washed by waves, minimal signs of age, otherwise in good condition, overall h approx. 47 cm. Artist info: French sculptor (1845 Lyon to 1902 Neuilly-sur-Seine), active in the 19th century, studied at the École des Beaux-Arts under Francois Jouffroy, exhibited regularly in the Paris salons until 1899.
