OPERA - CAROSIO, Margherita (Genoa, 1908 – same place, 2005)
In 1924, at the age of 16, she made her opera debut in Novi Ligure as the leading role in Lucia di Lammermoor. In 1928, at the age of 19, thanks also to the recommendation of the Irish soprano Margaret Sheridan, she was Musetta in La bohème and Feodor in Boris Godunov at the Royal Opera House in London, where she returned only after the end of the Second World War. She quickly became famous in Italy, performing in all the major theatres in soprano di coloratura roles: Amina, Norina, Konstanze, Oscar, a role with which she made her debut at La Scala in 1929. At La Scala, she successfully performed several roles, but her workhorse was Rosina in Il barbiere di Siviglia. She also interpreted more unusual parts, such as Zerlina in Fra Diavolo, the Queen of Shemakhan in Il gallo d'oro, Volkhova in Sadko, the title role in Stravinsky's Le rossignol, Aminta in the first Italian performance of La donna silenziosa, Egloge in Mascagni's Nerone. Later in her career, she tried her hand at more challenging operatic roles, including Mimì and Violetta. In 1946, on tour with the Teatro San Carlo in Naples, she returned to London, performing La traviata and L'elisir d'amore, later also performed at La Scala and recorded for EMI. In 1949, again at La Scala, he starred in La bohème under the baton of Victor De Sabata (of which there is a limited live selection) and in 1954 he played the title role in Amelia al ballo, which he later recorded on disc. Since the 1930s he also began a small film career, in musical films or films where music was a main component. These included Regina della scala (1936) by Camillo Mastrocinque, Angeli sulla terra (1942), where she played the part of soprano Adelina Patti, L'elisir d'amore (1947) by Mario Costa. He also worked as a musician in Giorgio Walter Chili's drama film Ripudiata (1954). She retired from the stage in 1959 and for the next forty years followed that world that was so dear to her as a journalist and music critic. She passed away in her native Genoa at the venerable age of 96. Her voice has been passed down to us in numerous recordings made before and after the advent of the microgroove. Autograph portrait of the artist. Very good condition Photograph; 20x25 cm
