Ab 1927 studierte Stankowski an der Folkwangschule in Essen. Seit 1929 in der Schweiz lebend, entwickelt er hier seine Theorien über die "konstruktive Grafik". Er widmete sich vielen Medien der Kunst von der Malerei, über die Druckgraphik bis zur Fotografie mit dem Ziel den Unterschied zwischen freier und angewandter Kunst aufzuheben. Dieses Ziel verfolgt auch die 1993 gegründete Stankowski-Stiftung. 2006 zeigte die Staatsgalerie Stuttgart eine große Retrospektive.
